INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION

In 1968 Luis and Lea Remba opened their print workshop to artists and began printing lithographs.  Celebrated Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo’s desire for more volume and texture in his prints inspired Luis Remba to invent the Mixografía® technique in 1973 which prints the artist’s image in a 3-dimensional relief with fine surface detail.  Mixografía® produces prints on handmade paper, cast-copper multiples and sculpture that expand the language of traditional editions by giving the artist greater choice.

This exhibition presents a 30-year survey of a variety of innovative projects from the workshop focusing on the Mixografía® prints coupled with sculpture multiples by 24 American, European, Latin-American and Asian artists including: Arman, John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Jonathan Borofsky, Louise Bourgeois, Stanley Boxer, Helen Frankenthaler, Gunther Gerzso, Mathias Goeritz, Donald Lipski, Richard Meier, Henry Moore, Mimmo Paladino, Jorge Pardo, Seo-bo Park, Ed Ruscha, Julião Sarmento, Georges Segal, Kiki Smith, Donald Sultan, Rufino Tamayo, Tom Wesselmann, Terry Winters and Peter Wüthrich.

The exhibition was organized by the Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR., where it was presented in 2009. The exhibition.was curated by Annette Dixon, Curator, Portland Art Museum.

BRIEF HISTORY OF

Founded in Mexico City in 1968, Luis & Lea Remba began to print and publish fine art lithographs for invited artists as an alternative to the limited options available at the time for artists wishing to make prints free from creative restrictions common at other workshops.  Upon extending an invitation to Rufino Tamayo in 1973, Luis Remba was challenged to develop the Mixografía® printing process to achieve the deep relief print Tamayo had for many years wanted to make.  The development of this new process, unique in the world of printmaking, has now attracted many scores of artists to the relocated workshop in Los Angeles (since 1984), producing prints with accuracy, texture, and deep relief.

Mixografía® continues to forge associations with an international slate of the world’s most celebrated artists making prints of extraordinary quality using techniques further developed over a quarter of a century.  The workshop actively prints & publishes limited edition prints and fabricates sculpture frequently extending invitations to the next generation of artists who push the workshop with a diverse array of project ideas further contributing to the unique character of these collaborations.

The prints and sculptures produced continually for 40 years have been exhibited in a wide variety of museums and institutions, and are a part of many collections worldwide.

Located near the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in downtown Los Angeles, the workshop gallery maintains a program of exhibitions dedicated to showing this exceptional work, and is open free to the public five days a week, year-round.

Mixografia® prints and Mixocast® sculptures have been exhibited at many of the world's most prestigious art institutions including the Staadliche Kunsthalle, Berlin, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Hermitage Museum, Leningrad, Instituto de Arte Contemporaneo, Lima, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Wight Gallery, University of California, Los Angeles, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Edvard Munch Museum, Oslo, Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, National Museum of Art, Tokyo, Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas, Caracas, National Gallery of Victoria, Victoria, Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

What is a Mixografía® Print?

“The Mixografía® technique is a fine art printing process that allows for the production of deep textured prints with very fine surface detail. The artist begins with any solid material or combination of materials on which he or she incises, impresses, carves, collages or builds up a matrix. From this matrix, a sequence of forms are then molded, one from another, resulting in a highly sensitive cast copper printing plate in reverse. The plate is inked using all the colors applicable to that print. Moist paper pulp is then laid onto the surface. Both plate and pulp are forced through the press, simultaneously forming the paper sheet and dimensional character of the plate, while transferring the color to the paper. The plate is re-inked each time a print is pulled. Because of the extreme pressure at which these prints are produced, the ink is absorbed into the paper, giving them a fresco-like quality.”

Dr. Ruth Fine, Chief Curator of Prints, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC - USA
