| JAYNE MANSFIELD, as she appeared on the
movie set of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter (1957), accessorized
her snug one-piece bathing suit with a lap dog, scarf and the "butterfly"
sunglasses that were all the rage in the fifties. If her looks hadn't already
accomplished it, the role firmly established her image as the voluptuous,
blonde sexpot. |
In 1946, retired star Norma Shearer was visiting a ski
lodge when a picture of the clerk's daughter caught her eye. Shearer asked
for a copy to send to MGM and a few months later, young Jeanette Morrison
was in Hollywood acting in the movie The Romance of Rosy Ridge (1947)
with Van Johnson. The film was set in the post-Civil War period, and Johnson,
inspired by General Robert E. Lee, renamed the starlet JANET LEIGH.
She's seen here ten years later with husband TONY CURTIS relaxing
at their Beverly Hills home, both in the prime of their careers. Curtis
starred in several notable films in the fifties, including Sweet Smell
of Success (1957), The Defiant Ones (1958) and his biggest hit,
Some Like It Hot (1959) with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon. Leigh
was one of Hollywood's busiest actresses in the fifties, appearing in dozens
of films, but none left a lasting impression like Alfred Hitchcock's suspense
masterpiece, Psycho (1960), with its the spine-tingling shower scene.
Leigh and Curtis were divorced in 1962. |
